System design brief

In order to meet the growing demand for Electric Vehicles, the Maastricht council set out to install Electric Vehicle charging units in the square. The council had previously installed several Electric Vehicle charging units above ground, however due to heavy traffic flow and restricted spaces, the units were often being damaged and knocked over. The council sought after a solution which meant that the charging units could be installed underground, and pulled-up as required. However, due to the high-water level onsite, installing the charging units underground would mean that the units would be at risk of water damage…until Hydrorock was discovered!

The Hydrorock Natural Aquifer SuDS System

With Hydrorock’s unparalleled absorption and infiltration rates, when installed, the water surrounding the charging units would efficiently be drained away, eliminating the risk of water damage to the charging units and onsite flooding. Due to the high-water level onsite, no other SuDS solutions would be suitable, or could compare to Hydrorock’s absorption ability – holding around 94% water of its cubic volume.

Unique Aquifer System
As well as impressive absorption, the Hydrorock Natural Aquifer SuDS system is more efficient than any other SuDS system, due to it being a natural aquifer. When the Hydrorock Aquifer Blocks are touching they form a unitary aquifer system which encourages efficient drainage and infiltration within the confines of the site – rather than just collecting the water elsewhere. This meant that not only were the charging units safe from water damage, but the whole site would be protected from flooding.

Easy and flexible install
Using a mini-crane, Hydrorock’s high-density Aquifer Blocks were installed to withstand the weight of heavy vehicles, such as fire engines and heavy-load vehicles. Due to the flexible, modular configuration of the blocks, the trenches only needed to be dug to the same width as the blocks. This meant there was minimal disruption during the install; so minimal in fact that the market day continued as usual and was completed in one day. This easy and minimal-disruption installation process makes the Hydrorock Natural Aquifer SuDS System ideal for retrofit commercial and residential projects.
